Rosacea Medication – Your Choices

Rosacea MedicationIf you plan on using rosacea medication, it is important to be properly diagnosed first. This chronic skin condition is characterized by facial redness, acne, swelling, itching and rashes, among others.

If you are suffering from rosacea, it is best to go to a dermatologist first to find out the causes of your condition. Below is some of the most widely used rosacea medicine:

Oral Medicine

  • Antibiotics for Rosacea
Antibiotics are commonly prescribed for the treatment of rosacea because of their anti-inflammatory properties. Rosacea antibiotics have been shown to effectively reduce acne and inflammation, as it prevents bacterial infection. Antibiotics should be prescribed by a physician and make sure you take the proper dosage to ensure safety and efficacy.
  • Antihistamines
Antihistamines are also prescribed medications for rosacea, as they can reduce swelling, redness, rashes and itchiness. Antihistamines are commonly given to people with allergic reactions and asthma. It is important to note, however, that these are only effective in treating your rosacea provided that it is triggered by an underlying allergic reaction to food or other external factors.

Topical Solution

  • Topical steroid
Topical steroids are used as rosacea medication, as they can reduce inflammation. This topical solution must be applied at least twice a day on the affected areas for optimum results. Topical steroids are not recommended for long-term treatment, as they can cause irritations on the skin.
  • Cleansers
Some cleansers used for the treatment of acne are also used for rosacea treatment due to their antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. The recommended cleansers for the treatment of this skin condition include; benzoyl peroxide and sulfur-based facial wash.

Rosacea medication varies in efficiency, which is why it is important to ask for a prescription from a doctor. That way you can be given the type of medication and exact dosage depending on your needs. While rosacea cannot be eliminated completely, the symptoms associated with the condition can be treated with the right medication.

You also have to ensure that you are not allergic to any of the medications prescribed to you. Otherwise your rosacea could get worse. Keep in mind that the severity of the symptoms of rosacea can be triggered by allergic reactions. You should also decide with your doctor as to which treatment is best suitable for your condition and for its underlying causes. When taking rosacea medication, follow the exact dosage according to your doctor’s prescription.
